The TFLA Administrator of the Year Award is given to school administrators who have distinguished themselves through their support of the foreign language program in their schools. Congratulation to Martha Vásquez, District Coordinator for World Languages at San Antonio ISD who received this award at the TFLA Fall Conference on Friday, October 26th. This award was open to superintendents, principals (K-12), deans, presidents (college/university), elementary/secondary campus and central office administrators.
World Languages teachers met to build district curriculum at the EPIC Saturday on October 20th for the AP Spanish Language & Culture and the AP Spanish Literature & Culture courses. These teacher received training and collaborated to build Year-At-A-Glance Documents as well as Instructional Focus Documents.
The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, AP and IB students from Thomas Jefferson High School put together an amazing one act play to celebrate Mexican’s Independence Day. Students, faculty and staff gathered at Jeff’s Historic auditorium to join in the celebration.
All of SAISD World Languages Educators gathered at Longfellow IB Middle School for professional learning and collaboration. We celebrated our program’s accomplishments, engaged in technology & GT training, and began planning for the upcoming 2018-2019 School Year.
On March 28, 2018 the Sam Houston Academic Decathlon team and their sponsors were honored by San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and the City Council for their outstanding achievements. At the time of this recognition, three of the seniors had received full rides for college! We are incredibly proud of our Hurricanes!
San Antonio ISD hosted the Annual AATSP Academic Contest, “Colores, Voces, y Poesía” at Longfellow Middle School. This is the second year the event has been hosted in the district. The following students placed in the competition:

The San Antonio ISD World Languages teachers from Longfellow and Tafolla Middle Schools took a group of students on a Learning Expedition to the Institute of Texan Cultures. While there, students experienced firsthand the annual celebration of the Chinese New Year. They were also able to experience examples of the many Asian cultures that have influenced the development of Texas.
One of the highlights of the day was a performance given by Longfellow students enrolled in the Chinese Mandarin class under the leadership of SAISD Chinese teacher Dr. Liang Ward. This group was invited by the Confucius Institute at UTSA to perform and dance for the event.

Two San Antonio ISD students gave an outstanding performance at the 2018 Region 20 Spanish Spelling Bee competition. This event is part of the educational highlights of the commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the City of San Antonio.
High school student Maria Garcia from YWLA placed second and middle school student Paola Jauregui from YWLA placed third in their respective competitions. Paola will now represent SAISD in the 2018 National Spanish Spelling Bee that will take place in San Antonio this summer.
